Online Play for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon is back on Wii U
After months of being down for maintenance, they are finally back for any remaining Wii U online players.
Starting today, the Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 servers will return and players will hopefully be able to play online for the remainder of the Wii U's lifespan, which is probably not much now that the Switch is over 6 years old and the likelihood of the next console coming out next year is increasing.
Starting on 8/2, we will be resuming online play for the Wii U games Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. We appreciate your patience during the extended wait.

The maintenance started at the beginning of March and has lasted for about 5 months, it was caused by an undisclosed vulnerability, people had speculated that it was one that allowed other players to take over your console, Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 were the only games known to still have this vulnerability, other games that had it were already patched at the time.
If you wish to play Splatoon or Mario Kart 8 online on your Wii U, all you have to do is update your game before opening it after the maintenance is done.
