Little Nightmares 3 will not have couch co-op
"We really want the player to experience it as they want," but not that way.
Recently, Little Nightmares 3 was announced, and one of the most exciting aspects shown during the announcement was that the game would feature cooperative play, but there's a catch, Supermassive Games confirmed that the game will only feature online co-op, locally you will only be able to play in single player.
Supermassive Games' game director Wayne Garland and Bandi Namco EU producer Coralie Feniello spoke with GamesRadar, and they said some interesting stuff.
Feniello talked about how fans highly requested the co-op feature and that they wanted players to play, however they wanted.
"I do think that it will add a layer to the game as well, by letting you experience it with a friend. But at the same time, we really want the player to experience it as they want. So that's why we kept single player, so if you don't play online co-op you would be able to play with AI with you." -Coralie Feniello
On the other hand, Garland does not seem to want you to experience it the way you want, as they have decided to keep co-op online only, apparently to maintain the immersion they want you to have.
"Couch (co-op) is something that we considered, but again, when you come back to the atmosphere and the immersion that we're trying to elicit through Little Nightmares, I think it was important for us that we stuck to our online co-op only rather than traditional more party aspects." -Wayne Garland
Claiming that local co-op would affect your immersion does make a little bit of sense. Still, if you are playing with a friend, which surely is the main reason one would play co-op, then it would most likely have the same effect as if both were playing together when talking about immersion, either the two are really into the game, or neither would take it as seriously, the only difference is that now both are inconvenienced with having to play separately.
