Ubisoft says in-game pop-up ads in Assassin's Creed were an accident
The issue is already fixed, and they said that they intended to put the pop-up on the main menu.
Pop-up ads are not uncommon in the more recent Assassin's Creed games, although they are often on the main menu screen right before you start playing; Ubisoft does this to promote their other products without annoying their players too much.
However, more recently, it seems that they might have overstepped a bit more than they were tolerated, as a Pop-up ad had appeared for some players when they were playing, as shown in this Reddit Post, where the ad appeared when the player wanted to open the game's map.
One could easily think that Ubisoft is testing players' reactions so that they can place more ads in the future and people will not complain; if nobody minds this action, or if it turns out that not enough people complain, this kind of ad will appear in more titles.
Now, Ubisoft has come out to say that this in-game pop-up ad was not intended to appear that way and that due to a technical error, the ad appeared in-game instead of in the main menu, as is usually the case with their games.
We have been made aware that some players encountered a pop-up message in-game while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday. This was the result of a technical error that has now been fixed.

Our intention was to display a promotion for Assassin's Creed Mirage as part…
The issue was resolved as soon as they were made aware of this, though the idea that this was just a test to see how much their players were willing to accept in terms of ads still feels plausible.
