A Trailer for a canceled Multiplayer Insomniac Spider-Man got leaked
The trailer likely originates from the leak caused after Insomniac got Hacked in December 2023.
There have been tweets circulating about a trailer for what seems like a Multiplayer Spider-man game by Insomniac; the trailer showcases gameplay very similar to Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 but with up to 5 Spider-People including Spider-Woman/Ghost-Spider, popularly known as Spider-Gwen.
The title of this game is Spider-Man: The Great Web, and it might have been a way to explore the connection between the video game Spider-Man and the Insomniac Spider-Man we have seen in other Multiversal Events, like in the comics or the Across the Spiderverse movie; it would also the first time we see a version of Gwen Stacy.
It seems that the trailer for the game was created using elements from Spider-Man 2 as a proof of concept to show the potential of the game. The trailer shows five players traveling through different dimensions and fighting various powerful enemies. Despite the cancellation of the game, it's likely that not much progress was made in terms of development, so not a lot of resources were wasted. It could even be a trailer to pitch the idea, and it wasn't really canceled; more like it wasn't approved in the first place.
To expand on the possibility that this trailer was likely to pitch the idea, several of the concepts we see in it, are already on Marvel's Spider-Man 2, like the combined attacks you can do whenever you run into the other Spider-Man or the small dimensions with enemies similar to some of the Mysterium challenges, but with a different background, and lastly, the phrase at the end of the trailer, "Be Greater, Together", which is the one used for Spider-Man 2, and so far, these phrases are different each game.
The reason it never saw the light of day is still unclear. It might be that Sony decided to slow down in this kind of game, as it might be a live-service game in the likes of Suicide Squad, but with a gameplay style more faithful to the characters, and considering that Live-Service as a concept has received a lot of pushback from players, they chose to not opt-in into this one.
