A new Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming in 2026
It is most definitely a sequel to the first movie, but the wording leaves plenty of room for interpretation.
As part of Mario Day, Nintendo has announced that they are working again with Illumination to make a new film based on the world of Super Mario Bros., likely a sequel, but the wording may indicate that it might not focus on the Mario Brothers this time.

They didn't release much information, but they did give one of the most important details: the release date. The new film will be released on April 3rd, 2026, in the United States of America and many other countries, while a few others will get it later in the same month.
Shigeru Miyamoto's wording in both the video announcement and the written tweet doesn't say the movie will be a sequel to the Mario Movie, only that it will be set in the world of Super Mario Bros., meaning that Mario and Luigi might not be the main focus this time. Considering Miyamoto mentioned broadening Mario's world further and having a bright and fun story, we might see more characters from the franchise or even learn more about the different lands.
We'll let you know the details once we're ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We're thinking about broadening Mario's world further, and it'll have a bright and fun story. We hope you'll look forward to it! [2/2]

In the post-credits scene of the first Mario movie, a Yoshi Egg is shown in the sewers. This suggests that we might get to see Yoshi in the upcoming film. Moreover, it's not confirmed whether the new movie will be a Super Mario Bros. 2 Movie or not. Therefore, it's possible that we might see a Yoshi Movie instead, where the Brothers will have less screen time, and the focus will be on the franchise's iconic dinosaur, but considering how Nintendo tends to handle spin-offs, the movie might as well be about Yoshi but still be called Super Mario Bros. 2 Movie: Yoshi's Island or something similar.
Speculation aside, Miyamoto stated that more information about the movie will be released when there is more to show. With the movie still two years away, it might not be that soon when we learn more about it.
